5 Steps to Deal with Difficult Employees

Difficult people present no problem if we pass them on the street, in the supermarket or in a building lobby. Nevertheless, when we have to work with them difficult people can become major irritants.
It seems that some people are just born to be difficult. We have all worked with them and most of us dislike them. Difficult people are easy to recognize--they show up late, leave early, don’t turn their work in on time and have an excuse for every failing.
Wait, there’s more. These difficult people harass you and others, ask too many self-explanatory questions, neglect details, distract you and repeatedly challenge you and others. Even worse, when they interact with customers, vendors and people lower than them on the corporate hierarchy, they can be grouchy, impolite, condescending, uninformed, misleading, inappropriate or simply wrong. Do you know anyone like this?
Naturally, no one wants to work with difficult people. When dealing with problematic employees, productivity decreases, frustrations rise, morale goes down and customers and vendors get upset.
How to Handle Them
1. Don’t ignore the problem. Assuming that the employee provides value to the company and possesses redeeming qualities, there are ways to deal with difficult employees. Most often, managers will simply ignore problematic staffers. Managers who live by this rule hope the problem will just go away; that these people will somehow turn themselves around or stop being troublesome. Ignoring the situation is the wrong solution to what could likely become a progressive problem.
2. Intervene as soon as possible. It is important to take action as soon as the negative behavior pattern becomes evident--when left untouched, this problem will only escalate.
Occasionally, the difficult employee has no idea that his behavior is a problem or that others react negatively to his actions. This is because most people tend to put up with the annoying behavior and “go along to get along.” At the same time, some employees just consider it a “job frustration.” Just like some managers, employees want to be liked by colleagues and subordinates and are therefore reluctant to speak up when a problem arises.
Ultimately, it is the manager’s responsibility to take the appropriate action to correct the problem. Whether the concern exists due to the employee’s lack of knowledge of the issue, lack of feedback or projecting the difficulty onto someone else, the manager has the responsibility of addressing and turning around the predicament. The manager needs to gather information from employees to discern the extent of the problem and personally observe the employee interacting with customers or vendors.
3. Research the problem personally. Armed with accurate data and examples, the manager needs to then take this person into a conference room or office--away from others--and calmly address the issue. To begin, the manager needs to ask the employee if he is aware of any ongoing issues to determine if the difficult person is aware of the problems.
If the employee is “unaware,” the manager needs to describe the unacceptable behavior. The employee might interrupt to disagree or deny the existence of any issues. Nevertheless, the manager needs to continue by giving clear examples of the unwanted behavior.
The manager also needs to allow the employee to respond to the allegations. If the difficult employee refuses to believe that the allegations exist despite the evidence, the most the manager can hope for is an intellectual acceptance of the possibility that a problem exists.
4. Help the problematic employee to get back on track. Once the employee begins to understand that these negative behaviors are real and experienced by others in the organization, the manager or someone from human resources should begin to coach the difficult employee in displaying more acceptable and appropriate behaviors. The employee needs time and practice in “trying on” new, more suitable behaviors. HR and/or the manager need to provide specific feedback to this employee on the success or failure of his efforts in minimizing the negative actions and implementing ones that are more positive.
5. If all else fails, termination may be necessary. If the employee continues to deny his inappropriate behavior and refuses to try to improve the situation, the manager needs to place this person on the fast track towards termination. Often this involves recording a series of well-documented verbal and then written feedback about the behavior. Strictly following company protocol, there should be a period for the employee to address the questionable behavior. If this trial period does not result in improved behavior, then the employee needs to be terminated.
Most employees will recognize the negative behavior and will at least attempt to turn it around. This is especially true during tough economic times when unemployment is high and finding a new job is difficult. In any case, the manager needs to follow company guidelines in recognizing the unacceptable behavior, providing direct feedback, providing input to try to turn it around and ultimately taking action in a timely manner.
Not doing so is a disservice to the problematic employee, other employees and the success of the organization.

I'm not one of the new-age specialists who say that coffee makes you more intellectually endowed. I'm simply a guy who loves the taste of java. Yep, that's right! It's not even the caffeine issue. Heck, you can take the caffeine out of the equation, because I love the flavor. Personally I've even considered opening my very own coffee shop business. Then after many nights of brainstorming I realized that I'd consume all the profits.

That would just not go over well in the long run. However, I do encourage those who strive to start their own business to consider a coffee shop business. This is where the money's at. It's that simple. You take a town that lacks a proper coffee house or espresso drive-thru, and then you invest in a coffee shop business where the morning traffic hits. LESS SLEEP LEADS TO CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES: A study by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that a sleep deficit built up over just five nights could significantly stress the heart. Chronic sleep deprivations can stress the heart and raise the risk of cardiovascular disease. The neurological and behavioural effects of long term sleep loss have been well-documented which leads to lowered concentration and hand eye co-ordination to poor mood. The findings show that the shift workers are at higher risk for heart disease due to the fact that they get less sleep because of the disruption in their sleep-wake rhythms. This shows the importance of sleep. Sleep at night will be the actual sound sleep rather than sleeping in the day time.

Playing is fun...

I always enjoy playing. I had and i still have so many good number of friends in my apartments to play with me. I have friend in my apartments who is 2yrs old and really an enthuaistic company of mine. Whenever i feel like life is bouring or when i feel sad she gives enoromus amount of energy. Playing, though it reflects some games like shuttle, tennis, etc., ITS JUST LOCK AND KEY, CARDS, JUMPING for us. I do play shuttle with my other friends in apartments. We almost play everyday. Just as I was playing shuttle today I thought of publishing a post in my blog. I really feel very energitic and I feel like getting back my school days. All my friends are actually school goers. But I don't care. What all I need is a good company to play.Thats it. Most of the people in out apartments oppose us playing. They never understand onething, students nowadays never have time to play which is actually a sort of excercise. I still wonder seeing my grandma who is above 70 who is healthy and I'm sure its because she used to fetch water from long distance and she was supposed to a lot of household activities. In my point of view, Children must have some activities apart from their studies. It can be in any of the forms.

My Diary.....

I happened to read an article(MEMORIES OF ANOTHER DAY) in the young world dated june 9, which is about a girl during Hitler's period. Hitler conquered Holland where she actually lived in the secret annexe hoping they(her family) would escape. During that time, a diary her parents had gifted became her good friend. Later she died and her papers were protected which was really moving. To tell writing is fun and it depends on interest. I once started writing diary when i was in class 8. But not more than an year I could continue. For the first week i found it very interesting and slowly my interest started fading. I found it to be irritating to write daily as if it was a home work. At that time i wanted to tell everyone that i m a diary user. But the truth was, I didn't write out of real interest. As soon as i read this article I remembered how i started writing diary and how i gave up. If any of you are diary writers share what you feel about diary writing. Atleast I can see how many of you feel like me and how many of have real interest.

One of my favourite shows in chuti tv is Dora Buji.Dora is actually a small girl and buji is a monkey.It is entertaining as well as educative for children. Altogether it is edutainment. In each show they get into some trouble like missing their bag, crossing a bridge,trecking,reaching chocolate tree for which there will be some puzzle to be solved. I really appriciate the way they made the movie. sometime Dora speaks English and she asks the viewers(children)to repeat. Not only that but also telling numbers. This makes the children to let them know new things. Time being as far as they are small kids there is no problem.But when they start their studies, Television should not distract.May be for entertainment it can be viewed. But whatever, this program is really very entertaining and sometimes sidesplitting.Imagination and projecting what they had imagined is really perfect as far as this program concerned.I'm sure children enjoy watching this program(me2!!!!!!!!!!).

i always have passion to music. recently you all might have seen AIRTEL SUPERSINGER-2008 where i could see enchanting and wonderful judges mr.unnikrishnan,mr.srinivas,mrs.sujatha, intelligent voice trainer mr.ananth vidiyanathan ,interesting mr&mrs vasudevan nair and the contestants.ranjani's ellimination was really a very unfortunate thing. she is really a wonderful singer.the main aim is to introduce a new young singer in the play back industry. i think the comments given by the judges and the training given by the voice trainer helped them a lot to reveal their potential and confidence.
However my favourite singer is mr.consistent Ravi. he is a versatile and fantastic singer. ranjani, renu both have a very beautiful honey like voice. ajeesh also has a very nice voice and is a very good singer. I know its too late to discuss about this reality show but however since just now i created this blog i m posting this. onbehalf of the music lovers i convey my wishes to all the contestants and to airtel super singer mr.ajeesh a very all the best to have a nice and bright future.

The rise of global warming could cause cities run out of water, says Steven Chu, who shared the Nobel Prize in Physics a decade ago. Decreases in snow and glacier melt - major sources for water - have some wondering about global warming's impact and has spurred an increase in pushing for ocean desalinization technology.

• The effects of global warming already are being seen, as some rivers now become dry in the summertime, and the snow and glacier melt in the Himalayas has declined.
• The Sierra Nevada mountain range of California will see its snowpack decline by between 30 to 70 percent by the year 2100.
• Warming prevents snow and rain from being stored in the mountains, meaning that while some areas will see an increase in snow, it will be wasted as run-off water.
• The impact of the Sierra Nevadas losing water could mean that Californian agriculture will be disrupted, and that later people may migrate away from The Golden State.
• The increased attention on global warming has caused some companies to invest further in desalinizing seawater for human consumption.
• "(Water) is probably the first thing that will hit home," Chu said. "The water storage problem is becoming a mess."

With global warming, the loss of usable water will be one of the greatest impacts on the human race.
